Knysna Forest Walks And Hidden Trails

Knysna Forest Walks and Hidden Trails: A Local’s Guide

There’s a reason we locals never tire of the forest. It’s not just the ancient yellowwoods or the soft carpet of ferns underfoot. It’s the quiet. The way the light filters through the canopy. And the fact that you can walk for hours without seeing another soul. Here’s my honest guide to the best forest walks and hidden trails in the Knysna area – the ones we actually do on our days off.

Jubilee Creek: The Family Favourite

Base yourself at Knysna Paradise Guesthouse – breakfast included, lagoon views, minutes from the action. Check availability + book direct and save.

Just 20 minutes from our guesthouse, Jubilee Creek is the classic. It’s an easy, flat walk along a crystal-clear stream with picnic spots and a small waterfall at the end. Go early on a weekend to beat the crowds, or on a weekday for near solitude. The gravel road in is fine for any car. Pack a braai pack – there are fireplaces and benches. It’s the perfect half-day outing.

The Big Walk: Terblans Walk

For those wanting a proper hike, Terblans Walk is the one. It’s a 6km circular route that climbs steadily through magnificent forest. You’ll cross wooden bridges, pass giant Outeniqua yellowwoods, and eventually reach a viewpoint over the Goukamma River valley. It’s moderately strenuous – take water and good shoes. The trailhead is just past the Garden of Eden, a short drive from Knysna.

Hidden Gem: The Kranshoek Coastal Hiking Trail

Most visitors drive straight past Kranshoek, but this is where the magic is. The trail starts in the forest and drops down to the coastline, offering dramatic cliff views and fynbos. It’s a full day hike (about 13km), but you can do just the first 2km to the viewpoint and back. The secret is to go in the late afternoon – the light on the sea is golden, and you’ll likely have the trail to yourself.

A Quick Forest Fix: Garden of Eden

Short on time? The Garden of Eden (on the N2 towards Plettenberg Bay) has a beautiful 1km boardwalk loop through ancient forest. It’s wheelchair-friendly and perfect for a slow stroll. Look out for the Knysna loerie – they’re shy but loud. This is a great stop before heading back to your room for a nap.

Practical Tips for Forest Walking

  • Weather: The forest is magical in light rain, but avoid after heavy storms – trails get muddy and slippery.
  • Safety: Stick to marked paths. The forest is dense and easy to get turned around in.
  • Wildlife: You might see bushbuck, monkeys, and if you’re very lucky, signs of the Knysna elephant. Keep your distance.
  • Gear: Sturdy shoes, a light rain jacket, and insect repellent are non-negotiables.

Where to Stay

After a day on the trails, there’s nothing better than returning to a warm room and a hot shower. At Knysna Paradise Guesthouse, we’re perfectly positioned – 10 minutes from the forest entrances and 15 minutes from the waterfront. We’ll happily draw you a map of the less-known routes and point you to our favourite post-walk coffee spot.

For longer stays, consider our sister properties: Paradise Holiday Lodge for self-catering comfort, or Paradise Central if you prefer being in the heart of town. All offer the same warm, local welcome.

Come walk with us. The forest is waiting.
