Our winter runs from June to August, with daytime temperatures hovering around a comfortable 15–20°C. The rain is intermittent, but when it clears, the light over the Heads is nothing short of dramatic. The forests take on a deeper green, and the sea mist rolls in like a soft blanket. It is moody, romantic, and gloriously quiet. You will have the trails, the restaurants, and the viewpoints largely to yourself.
What to Do on a Winter’s Day
- Walk the Heads: The Eastern Head cliff path is spectacular in winter. Wear a windbreaker, take a flask of coffee, and watch the waves crash against the rocks. It is invigorating and utterly humbling.
- Forest hikes: The Kranshoek and Jubilee Creek trails are less muddy in winter than you might think. The air is thick with the smell of pine and fynbos. Pack a picnic and find a sunny patch.
- Lagoon paddles: On a still, sunny winter morning, the lagoon is glass. Kayak hire is easy to find near the waterfront, and you will likely have the water to yourself.
- Wine and whisky: Visit a local cellar or the whisky bar at one of the waterfront hotels. Winter is the season for a good single malt or a bold red by the fire.
- Buchu and gin: Our local distilleries do wonderful winter specials. A gin tasting in front of an outdoor fire pit is a uniquely South African way to warm up.
Where to Eat When It’s Cold
Knysna’s culinary scene does not hibernate. The famous oyster farms are still active, and winter oysters are often plumper. For a proper winter meal, look for places with open fires. The Drydock and 34 South are staples, but for a truly local experience, find a small bistro in the old town. Order a potjie or a slow-braised lamb shank. Pair it with a glass of Pinotage from the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. Finish with a malva pudding – it is compulsory.
