Hiking the Knysna Forest: 5 Trails From Easy to Full-Day
The Knysna forest is one of South Africa’s most magical places — ancient yellowwoods, ferns, and the famous Knysna elephants (even if they’re shy). Here are 5 trails ranked from easy to full-day.
1. Jubilee Creek Walk (easy, 2–3 hours)
A gentle riverside walk through tall yellowwoods to a natural pool. Perfect family trail with picnic spots. Start at the Millennium Walk gate, pay a small conservation fee.
2. The Garden of Eden (easy, 30 min)
A short, wheelchair-friendly boardwalk through indigenous forest. Great for a quick dose of green before lunch. Combine with our local food guide for a perfect half-day.
3. Kalanderkloof Trail (moderate, 2–3 hours)
A lovely valley trail past an old sawmill site, following a stream through dense forest. Good birding — look out for the Knysna turaco with its bright red wings.
4. Terblans Walk (moderate, 3 hours)
Climbs through forest to a viewpoint over the surrounding hills. The giant yellowwoods along the way are 500+ years old — worth the climb.
5. Harkerville Coastal Forest Trail (full day, 5–6 hours)
The classic: forest, fynbos, and ocean cliffs all in one. Doable as a loop or with the two-car trick. Best done with a packed lunch — see our self-catering tips for picnic ideas.
