The vibe

- Knysna: Lagoon town with a working waterfront, arty Thesen Island, big forest presence. Quieter, more laid-back, great for foodies and nature lovers.
- Plett: Beach town with dramatic ocean cliffs, Robberg Peninsula, and a busier summer party scene. More families, more buzzing in December.
Beaches
Plett wins on beaches — Lookout Beach, Central Beach, and Robberg are wide and beautiful. Knysna has Brenton Beach and the lagoon swimming spots, which are lovely but not the same as Plett’s long stretches.

Honestly? Knysna is the better base — it’s central (the “gateway to the Garden Route”), closer to the forest, and has more dining options. Plett is a 40-minute day trip with a great beach day built in. You get the best of both.

- Families: Plett’s beaches edge it, but Knysna’s lagoon activities are superb for kids
- Couples: Knysna wins — waterfront dinners, sunset paddles, quieter evenings
- Solo/backpackers: Knysna’s central vibe and mix of stays wins
