Beaches That Work for Everyone

Forget the frantic rush to claim a spot. Knysna’s beaches are generous. Brenton-on-Sea is our favourite for families – it’s sheltered, has soft white sand, and the tidal pools keep the little ones busy while you sit back with a book. Head there early on a summer’s morning before the wind picks up.

If you want a lagoon-side paddle, Leisure Isle Beach is the one. The water is calm, shallow and warm, perfect for toddlers and first-time swimmers. And when the kids are done, you’re a five-minute drive from our guesthouse – which means nap time is never far away. For a proper day out, take the short drive to Buffels Bay inside the national park. It’s wilder, has braai spots, and the snorkelling at the point is a real treat for older kids.

Birds: More Than Just a Peek

Knysna is a birder’s paradise, but you don’t need binoculars or a life list to enjoy it. The Featherbed Nature Reserve (a short ferry ride from the waterfront) offers guided eco-trails that kids love – they get to see the famous Knysna loerie in the wild, plus dassies, and the views over the Heads are unbeatable.

For a self-guided wander, the Knysna Lagoon boardwalk from the waterfront to the Thesen Islands is easy, flat and full of kingfishers, herons and the occasional fish eagle. Bikes: Two Wheels, Endless Fun

The best way to see Knysna is on two wheels. Thesen Islands is a traffic-free haven – flat, safe and looped, perfect for little legs on balance bikes or older kids on proper wheels. Rent bikes from the waterfront and ride the full island circuit, stopping for coffee at one of the island’s delis.

For a longer ride, the Old Cape Road from town to Brenton is a gentle climb with spectacular views – best done with older children. And if you want to go off-road, the Goukamma trails just outside Sedgefield are world-class but still manageable for confident young riders.
