Knysna Elephant Park and Other Garden Route Wildlife Experiences
The Garden Route is one of the few places in South Africa where you can spend the morning with elephants, the afternoon watching dolphins surf the breakers, and the evening listening to bushbuck rustling in the fynbos behind your guesthouse. If wildlife is high on your list, here is how to do it properly from a base in Knysna.
While you are here — Western Cape Independence — news & facts
Knysna Elephant Park
Just 20 minutes from town on the N2 towards Plettenberg Bay, the Knysna Elephant Park is a sanctuary rather than a wild herd — the elephants here are rescued and habituated, and you walk among them with a guide. It is a genuinely moving experience, especially for children. Book the early morning interaction if you can; the light is softer and the elephants are most active. Allow two to three hours including the drive. It is an easy add-on to a day trip towards Knysna and the Plett beaches.
Addo, Plett and the Big Five
For a proper Big Five safari, Addo Elephant National Park is a three-hour drive east — doable as a long day trip but better as an overnight. Closer to home, several private reserves near Plettenberg Bay and Mossel Bay offer half-day game drives with lion, buffalo, rhino and giraffe. These suit families and anyone short on time.
Marine Wildlife
Knysna sits on a remarkable stretch of coastline. Between June and November, southern right whales calve in the bay — the viewpoint at Brenton-on-Sea and the heads at the Knysna Heads are prime whale-watching spots. Bottlenose and humpback dolphins are seen year-round, and seal colonies at Robberg Peninsula are a short drive away. Ocean safaris depart from Knysna and Plettenberg Bay most mornings, weather permitting.
Birds and Forests
The Knysna forests are home to the elusive Knysna turaco (loerie) — listen for the distinctive “kew-kew-kew” call on any forest walk. The Garden Route National Park, Goukamma Nature Reserve and the Wilderness lakes all offer excellent birding. Pack binoculars and go early.
