Knysna Tidal Pools and Swimming Spots for Warm Days

Knysna Tidal Pools and Swimming Spots for Warm Days

When the Garden Route turns on the heat, there’s nothing better than finding a cool, clean spot to swim. Knysna is spoilt for choice — from calm lagoon beaches to proper tidal pools along the rocky coastline. Here’s where the locals go when the mercury climbs.

Knysna Lagoon Beaches

The lagoon is your easiest win. The water is warmer than the open sea, the current is gentle, and there’s plenty of space for the whole family.

  • Bollard Bay — Right in town, sheltered, and perfect for a quick dip. Great for kids and a picnic on the grass.
  • Leisure Isle beaches — Quiet coves with shallow entry. Ideal for paddleboarding and lazy floating.
  • Buffalo Bay (Buffelsbaai) — About 20 minutes out of town, this is the classic swimming beach. Lifeguards in season, safe swimming, and a lovely tidal rock pool at the northern end.

Tidal Pools Along the Coast

For those who like a bit of rock-hopping with their swim, the tidal pools between Knysna and Sedgefield are hard to beat.

  • Brenton-on-Sea — The rock pools below the village are fantastic at low tide. Sheltered, clear, and teeming with little fish and anemones.
  • Noetzie — A steep walk down, but the reward is a wild, dramatic beach with rock pools beneath the famous castles. Check the tide before you go.
  • Gericke’s Point — A local favourite for snorkelling and rock pool exploring. Best at low tide, and the views back towards the Heads are unbeatable.

Swimming Safety and Timing

Always swim at low tide in the tidal pools — the rocks are slippery and the incoming tide can catch you out. The Indian Ocean side can have strong rip currents, so stick to lifeguarded beaches like Buffalo Bay if you’re unsure. Mornings are calmest and quietest; afternoons bring the sea breeze.
