Garden Route Road Trip: Knysna as Your Basecamp
The Garden Route has just been named the World’s Best Road Trip for 2026. Knysna sits dead centre, so you can reach Wilderness, Plettenberg Bay and Tsitsikamma in under an hour each way and still sleep in the same bed every night.
Why Knysna works as base
From the N2 you’re 25 km to Wilderness, 30 km to Plett and 65 km to the Tsitsikamma section of the national park. Fuel, supermarkets and mechanics are all here, and the lagoon gives you calm water when the sea is rough.
Three-day loop
Day one: drive west to Wilderness early. Walk the beach to Map of Africa viewpoint, then take the short trail to the waterfall at Island Lake. Back in Knysna by late afternoon for sunset on The Heads.
Day two: head east to Plett. Robberg Nature Reserve needs three hours; add a quick stop at Keurbooms Beach for a swim. Return via the old N2 for dairy-farm views.
Day three: Tsitsikamma. Start at Storms River Mouth, do the first hour of the Otter Trail to the suspension bridge, then drive the 7 km to Nature’s Valley for lunch. Home before dark.
Where to stay
Book a room at Knysna Paradise Guesthouse for a quiet garden setting five minutes from town. If you’re travelling on a tighter budget, Wild Farm Backpackers offers simple en-suite rooms and a pool on the outskirts. Both places keep cars secure and can arrange early breakfasts for day trips.
That’s it. One base, three national parks, zero daily packing.
