Garden Route Day Trip: Knysna to Nature’s Valley and Back
If you’re staying with us at Knysna Paradise Guesthouse and you’ve got one free day, spend it driving to Nature’s Valley. It’s roughly 60km east of Knysna along the N2, and it packs forests, lagoons, beaches and the famous Groot River Pass into a single loop you can do comfortably between breakfast and sundowners.

The Route Out
Leave Knysna mid-morning and head east on the N2 through Sedgefield and Wilderness. Don’t rush it. Pull into Wilderness for a coffee and a look over the lakes, then continue towards Plettenberg Bay. Just before Plett, take the R102 turn to the Garden Route National Park at Nature’s Valley. The road winds down through the Groot River Pass, built in 1880 — take it slow, the indigenous forest closes in around you and the views over the valley are worth the gears.
What To Do In Nature’s Valley
- Nature’s Valley Beach — a long, quiet stretch of sand where the Groot River meets the sea. Safe for swimming when the tide is right, perfect for a lazy picnic.
- Groot River Lagoon — hire a canoe or just paddle at the edge. The water is warm and calm in summer.
- Kalanderkloof Hiking Trail — a gentle 45-minute loop through coastal forest. Look out for Knysna louries and the odd bushbuck.
- The Salt River Mouth — a short drive further east, worth it for the rock pools and empty beach.
Lunch And The Drive Back
For lunch, the Nature’s Valley Restaurant and Trading Store does honest pub food and cold drinks under the trees. If you’d rather eat in Plett on the way home, The Lookout Deck at Lookout Beach is a solid bet for seafood with a view.
Drive back via the N2, but stop at Keurbooms River for a late-afternoon swim, or detour to Plettenberg Bay for an ice cream on Central Beach. You’ll be back in Knysna in time for a braai.
Practical Tips
- Fill up with petrol in Knysna or Plett — there’s no fuel in Nature’s Valley.
- Take cash for the restaurant and any park fees.
- Summer (Dec–Feb) is busy; go early. Winter days are crisp and quiet, and the forest is at its most beautiful.
- Cell signal is patchy in the valley. Download your maps beforehand.
