Featherbed Nature Reserve: Lagoon Ferry, Trails and Lunch
If you only do one outing in Knysna, make it Featherbed. This private nature reserve sits on the Western Head, the rugged cliff that guards the mouth of the Knysna Lagoon, and the only way in is by boat. That alone makes it special — you leave the town behind, cross the water, and step onto 150 hectares of fynbos, forest and coastline that most visitors never see.
The Lagoon Ferry
The trip starts at the Featherbed ferry jetty on the Knysna Waterfront, just a short stroll from our front door at Knysna Paradise Guesthouse. The crossing takes about 20 minutes, gliding past the Heads and the oyster barges, with commentary on the lagoon’s ecology and the 1,000-year-old milkwood trees clinging to the cliffs. Keep an eye out for dolphins and the occasional seal. It is calm, sheltered water — no seasickness worries here.
Trails on the Reserve
Once ashore, you have options depending on your energy and the time of day:
- The guided walk — a fairly gentle 2.2 km trail led by a reserve guide, covering the ancient milkwood forest, caves used by San people, and the shipwreck of the Paquita.
- The self-guided option — follow the same route at your own pace, with interpretive boards along the way.
- The viewpoint hike — a steeper climb to the top of the Western Head for sweeping views back over Knysna, the lagoon and the Indian Ocean beyond. Worth every step on a clear day.
Wear proper shoes and take a hat, even in mild weather. The coastal fynbos is exposed and the sun bites harder than you expect.
Lunch Under the Milkwoods
Most day packages include a buffet lunch at the reserve’s outdoor restaurant, set beneath the milkwood canopy with the lagoon glittering below. Expect fresh local line fish, salads, and a generous spread that suits hungry hikers. Book the lunch-inclusive option when you reserve — it is the easiest way to make a full day of it.
Practical Tips
- Book ahead in December and January; tours fill up fast.
- Morning departures are cooler and better for photography.
- Bring cash for drinks and tips.
- Allow three to four hours for the full ferry, walk and lunch.
Back on shore, you are minutes from the Waterfront’s oyster bars and our own veranda. If you are planning a Garden Route itinerary, our sister properties — Knysna Paradise Guesthouse and our guesthouses in Plettenberg Bay and Sedgefield — make comfortable bases for exploring the whole stretch. We are always happy to help guests book Featherbed and time it around the tides and weather.
