Garden Route on a Budget: Fuel, Food and Free Sights

The Garden Route is one of the most beautiful drives in the world, and it doesn’t have to empty your wallet. From Knysna to Plettenberg Bay and back through Wilderness, here’s how to stretch every rand without missing a thing.

Fuel: Plan Your Stops

Fuel is your biggest cost on this route, so drive smart. The N2 between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay is only about 30km, so base yourself in one town and do day trips rather than relocating every night. Fill up at the bigger stations in Knysna or George, where prices are usually a touch lower than the small coastal pumps. Keep your tyres properly inflated, drive at a steady 100km/h on the open road, and share lifts where you can. If you’re staying at Knysna Paradise Guesthouse, you’re perfectly placed to explore the whole route without long hauls.

Food: Eat Like a Local

  • Buy fresh fish straight off the boats at Knysna’s Thesen Island or the Plett harbour and braai it yourself.
  • Stock up at the Saturday Wild Oats Community Farmers’ Market in Sedgefield — great value, incredible produce.
  • Grab a Gatsby or a prego roll from a local takeaway instead of a sit-down lunch.
  • Pick up biltong, cheese and fresh bread for picnic lunches at viewpoints.
  • Self-catering kitchens at our sister properties, Knysna Paradise Guesthouse and its sister guesthouses, save you a fortune on breakfast alone.

Free Sights and Activities

  • Knysna Heads — walk the viewpoint trails for free and watch the lagoon meet the sea.
  • Buffalo Bay — long empty beach walks, no entry fee.
  • Wilderness beaches — endless sand and the famous Map of Africa viewpoint.
  • Big Tree, Storms River — a small fee, but the forest walk is worth every cent.
  • Knysna Forest walks — numerous trails are free and utterly magical.
  • Plettenberg Bay’s Robberg — the peninsula hike has a fee, but the beach and lookout points are free.

When to Come

Visit in the shoulder seasons — April to May or September to November — for cheaper accommodation, quieter roads and mild weather. Avoid December peak if you’re watching your budget.

Book your base at Knysna Paradise Guesthouse and let the Garden Route spoil you without spoiling your savings.
