Things to Do in Knysna: A Local’s 2026 Guide
Knysna stays one of the Garden Route’s best bases. Book a room at Knysna Paradise Guesthouse and you are minutes from the lagoon and forest roads. For backpackers on a budget, Wild Farm Backpackers also works well.
Knysna Heads
Start at the Eastern Head viewpoint. The short boardwalk gives clear views of the narrow channel where the Indian Ocean meets the lagoon. Walk the 3 km trail to the Western Head for quieter cliffs and whale sightings between June and November. Go early to avoid tour buses.
The Lagoon
Rent a kayak or stand-up paddleboard from the Waterfront. Paddle past Thesen Island and into the quieter eastern arms. For an easy day out, join a 90-minute lagoon cruise that stops at Featherbed Nature Reserve. Fresh oysters at the jetty restaurants cost around R180 for a dozen.
Indigenous Forests
Drive 15 minutes north to the Knysna Forest section of the Garden Route National Park. The Jubilee and Kranshoek trails are each about 9 km and stay mostly under canopy. Look for Outeniqua yellowwood trees and, if you are lucky, the rare Knysna loerie. Carry water and a rain jacket.
Markets and Local Food
Every Saturday the Knysna Waterfront hosts a farmers market from 08:00 to 14:00. Stock up on biltong, fresh bread and local honey. On Wednesdays the Brenton-on-Sea market runs smaller but has good coffee and second-hand books.
Adventure Options
Book a half-day quad bike tour through the forest or try the bungee jump at Bloukrans Bridge, 45 minutes away. For calmer thrills, rent a mountain bike at the Homtini Pass trailhead. Most operators open year-round, but book ahead for December and January.
Stay central at Knysna Paradise Guesthouse so you can reach all these spots without long drives. The town rewards early starts and simple plans.
