Whale season: June to November
Southern right whales arrive from June and stay until November, with the peak in August–October. Humpbacks pass through a bit earlier and later. The waters off the Knysna coast are a designated nursery area — you’ll see mothers and calves.
Where to spot them without a boat

- Brenton-on-Sea: The whale-watching favourite. The cliffs give you a high vantage point over the whole bay.
- Noetzie Beach: Secluded, quiet, and whales cruise surprisingly close in season.
