What it costs
- Self-guided rental: around R150–R250 per hour
- Guided tour (2 hours): R350–R550 per person
- Sunset paddles: usually R400–R600 — worth every rand, the light is magic
Where to launch
- Thesen Harbour Town: most operators launch here — easy parking, coffee nearby
- Knysna Waterfront: central, good for beginners
- Brenton-on-Sea: quieter side of the lagoon, for those who want space
Best times
Early morning (07:00–09:00) = flat water + bird life. Late afternoon (16:00–18:00) = golden light. Midday in summer can be windy — check the forecast.
What you’ll see
The Heads, oyster boats, kingfishers, and if you’re lucky, dolphins chasing mullet. The lagoon is home to the famous Knysna seahorse — keep an eye on the shallows.
