The Knysna Heads: 3 Best Viewpoints + How to Cross Safely

The Knysna Heads — two massive sandstone cliffs guarding the lagoon mouth — are the most photographed spot on the Garden Route. Here’s where to see them best and how to do it safely.

1. East Head Viewpoint (the classic)

Drive up George Rex Drive, park at the top, and get the postcard view of both Heads with the lagoon between them. There’s a short paved path — wheelchair friendly in parts. Free entry.

2. The View Point at Brenton-on-Sea

Across the lagoon, looking back at the Heads from the west. Less crowded, dramatic light in the late afternoon. Combine with a lagoon kayak paddle for the full experience.

3. From the Water

The Heads look completely different from sea level. A lagoon cruise or kayak gets you right up to the gap where the ocean meets the lagoon — and if the conditions are right, you’ll feel the power of the tides.

How to cross safely

• The channel between the Heads has strong tidal currents — only cross with a local skipper or experienced guide
• Never swim across — the rip is dangerous even on calm days
• Ferries and cruises cross regularly from the Waterfront; book ahead in season
• Check the tide tables if you’re kayaking near the Heads

When to go

Sunrise from East Head is spectacular. Sunset from Brenton is the photographer’s favourite. Midday gets crowded in school holidays — go early for peace.
