Knysna in Summer: 10 Free Things to Do
Knysna in December and January is buzzing — but the best things in town are free. Here are 10 free (or nearly free) ways to spend a perfect summer day.
1. Brenton Beach at low tide
The lagoon beach is calm and family-friendly. Pack a picnic, find a spot, and watch the kite surfers. Free parking at the beach.
2. The Knysna Heads viewpoint
Walk the paved path at East Head for the postcard view. Best at golden hour. See our full Heads guide.
3. Thesen Island stroll
Wander the marina boardwalks, watch the boats, and window-shop the art galleries. Ice cream optional (not free, but worth it).
4. Waterfront promenade
The boardwalk along the Waterfront is free and lively — street performers in season, harbour views, and the best people-watching in town.
5. Lagoon swim at Bollard Bay
A locals’ favourite swimming spot on the lagoon — clean, calm water and a grassy bank. Free and gorgeous.
6. Knysna Forest Garden of Eden
A short, magical walk through ancient forest — a small conservation fee, but essentially free for the wonder it gives. See our forest trails guide.
7. The Old Place + Millwood House
Wander the historic Old Place area — old stone buildings, coffee shops, and the Millwood House Museum (small fee, great history).
8. Sunset at Sparrebosch
A quiet viewpoint on the way to Brenton — the sunset over the Heads is free and unforgettable.
9. Knysna market days
Check the Old Gaol Group market or the Slow Market (seasonal) — wandering the stalls costs nothing and the vibe is pure Garden Route.
10. Night sky at the lagoon
After dark, the sky over the lagoon is surprisingly dark. Sit on the waterfront wall, listen to the water, and stargaze. Free therapy.
Where to stay for free fun
